A trainee aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Friday crashed in Andhra Pradesh's Medak district, killing two instructors. The mishap occurred at about 9.45 am when the HPT-32 training aircraft belonging to Air Force Academy Dundigal (located on the city's outskirts) crashed in an open ground at Annaram village of Jinnaram Mandal near the academy, a senior police officer said.
The aircraft carried a trainer and a trainee pilot at the time of the crash.
Ivraj Kaur and Prabhsimran Kaur, alumni of Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (AFPI) for girls in Mohali, were commissioned as flying officers from the Air Force Academy in Dundigal and Hyderabad.
Batting for gender parity in the armed forces, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who was chief guest at the combined graduation ceremony at Air Force Academy, Dundigal on the city outskirts, termed the event as a "milestone" as it also the first time that women have been given a combat role.
Till Sunday, the IAF had received 56,960 applications under the scheme.
